Arsenal v Spurs Preview – The First Ever North-London Derby at the Emirates

December 1, 2006

Hurrah! November is over. It has been our bogey month for many years and it has now passed, it yet again proved to be a bad month, losing three times in the league away from home and winning just once at the Emirates in the Premiership. So as far as I’m concerned November never happened, and we need to forget about Bolton and Fulham, and get on with Tottenham, the biggest game so far at the Emirates. I’m not that confident about tomorrow, as much as I want to be, it will be a very hard game, one which could see Spurs triumph, however after 2 consecutive defeats for our boys, there could be a backlash.

Hopefully it will be Spurs on the end of a good hiding, something we failed to do so far, perhaps with the exception of Reading. I mean a good hiding as in 6 or 7 goals scored, not 25 shots on target or 18 corners or 90% posession. We need to turn it into goals, and fast.

Also, our defending, we have conceded first 9 times already this season, which is a dismal record. Teams now how to play us on corners, near post, Bang! 1-0. We start panicking and getting the hump, the fans get frustrated, and it seems that we are rescued by free kicks, when was the last time we scored from open play? Liverpool? I must say its a great record, but there are going to be some days when we can’t rely on free kicks.

Clichy MUST play at left back tomorrow, because if its Flamini, Lennon will rip him to shreads, Clichy may not be playing his best football at the moment, but he has the pace, which Lennon has in abundance. If we can keep Lennon quiet then we have pretty much buggered up 70% of there attacking options. Also, Lennon goes quiet after about an hour, he’ll play a great first half, and eventually he fades out in the second half.

Phillipe Senderos was sent off on Wednesday night, and I read somewhere that he will miss the Chelsea game, I think he can play the following game to his Red card, but misses the next one, It’s not a three-match ban because it wasn’t a straight red. Also Toure will miss the Chelsea clash due to suspension. Now if Senderos is available for the game tomorrow, I would certainly not select him, it’s got to be Johan Djourou, although I know it won’t be Djourou starting, I know it might be bad for Phillipe’s confidence, but if he plays, and defends like he did at Fulham, we are in Big trouble. I hope he can bounce back, but I said that after Bolton, and look what happened.

Our skipper may not be taking part tomorrow, after a recurrence of his neck injury. Henry is certainly out of form at the moment, but you need your best players. He is our best player, he knows what Tottenham is all about, he hates them like we do, also that’s why I think Freddie should play tomorrow, someone who will get stuck in, his best days may be behind him, but he knows how much it really means to the fans.

Having said my bit about the players, there is also another bunch who need to do there bit tomorrow. The fans, its the game we always look for first when the fixture list comes out, its the one we look forward to, mainly because we’ve done them alot over the past 10 years. Forget the last two results, make sure you clap and cheer the players when they come our for the warm-up, don’t boo them, cause we don’t need you. If things don’t go our way, don’t start shouting shoot at every opportunity. We need to get behind the team, you can probably tell I’m really up for this game now, as oppose to yesterday. I fucking hate spurs, like every other true Arsenal fan, I cannot stress that enough, we must beat them. It’s so, so vital. Otherwise our season is finished in the League. Simple as that. I’m going to keep my prediction to myself for this game, not actually sure why, superstition perhaps?

If you are going, sing your heart out like we did at Fulham, we’re not just there to make up the numbers. If anything we’re more important the the team itself.

Come on You Reds!!
